Alliage de fer dont les principaux composants sont le chrome et le fer. Il s'agit de l'un des principaux agents d'alliage utilisés dans l'industrie sidérurgique. Outre les composants principaux que sont le chrome et le fer, il contient également du carbone, du silicium, du soufre, du phosphore et d'autres impuretés. Le ferrochrome contient 55% à 75% de chrome, selon la teneur en carbone, il est divisé en ferrochrome à haute teneur en carbone (4% à 10% C), à moyenne teneur en carbone (0,5% à 4% C), à faible teneur en carbone (> 0,15% à 0,5% C) et à microcarbone (≤ 0,15% C).

Chromium added to steel significantly improves its oxidation resistance and increases its corrosion resistance. Chromium is contained in many steels with special physico-chemical properties. Chromium in steel is added with ferrochrome. High-carbon ferrochrome is used as an alloying agent in ball-bearing steels (0.5% to 1.45% Cr), tool steels, mould steels (5% to 12% Cr) and high-speed steels (3.8% to 4.4% Cr) to improve the hardenability of the steel and increase its wear resistance and hardness. Adding chromium to cast iron can increase hardness and improve wear resistance, containing 0.5% to 1.0% chromium can improve its mechanical properties. High-carbon ferrochrome and charge-grade ferrochrome are used in large quantities as charge for smelting stainless steel (AOD or VOD method) to reduce production costs. Medium and low carbon ferrochrome is used in the production of medium and low carbon structural steel, carburised steel, the manufacture of gears, high pressure blower blades, valve plates and so on. Microcarbon ferrochrome is used in the production of stainless steel, acid-resistant steel, heat-resistant steel and electric heating alloy.
