Manganese is a silvery-white metal that is firm and brittle, but oxidises easily in air to produce a brown oxide covering, and also oxidises easily at elevated temperatures to form layers of oxidised rust. Manganese has a wide range of uses and is involved in almost every aspect of human production and life. Of the manganese produced globally each year, about 90 per cent is used in the iron and steel industry and 10 per cent is used in non-ferrous metallurgy, chemicals, electronics, batteries, agriculture and other sectors.

Manganese is widely used in automotive batteries, high-end equipment manufacturing, new materials and other fields, with an average of 4.5 kg of manganese required for each electric vehicle.
Manganese is used in the production of a number of important alloys, and in the iron and steel industry, manganese improves the quality, strength, toughness, stiffness, wear resistance, hardness and hardenability of rollers and castings. Manganese can form highly ferromagnetic alloys with aluminium and antimony, especially with small amounts of copper.
Manganese steel is used in large quantities to make steel mills, ball bearings, buckets for bulldozers and excavators and other components that are often subjected to wear, as well as ferromanganese-manganese rails, bridges and so on. The roof of the auditorium of the new cultural square in Shanghai is made of a novel mesh frame structure, welded with thousands of manganese steel tubes. There is not a single column in the middle of the fan-shaped hall, which is 76 metres longitudinally and 138 metres horizontally. Due to the use of manganese steel as a structural material, it is very strong, and the material used is less than other steel, on average, only 45 kilograms of manganese steel is used for each square metre of the roof.
In the military, high manganese steel is used to make steel helmets, steel armour for tanks and warheads for armour-piercing bullets. Manganese steel is smelted by mixing soft tin ore and iron ore containing 60-70% manganese.
Manganese is steelmaking with ferromanganese deoxygenation and residual in the steel, manganese has a very good deoxygenation ability, can be reduced to iron in the steel FeO, improve the quality of steel; can also be formed with sulphur MnS, which reduces the harmful effects of sulphur. Reduce the brittleness of steel, improve the hot working performance of steel; manganese can be mostly dissolved in ferrite, the formation of replacement solid solution, so that the ferrite strengthened to improve the strength and hardness of steel. Manganese is a beneficial element in steel.
