Chromium is used to make stainless steel. The colours of rubies and emeralds also come from chromium. As the most important metal in modern technology, chromium-nickel steel, fused in different percentages, is incredibly versatile and diverse.
Due to the brittle nature of chromium alloys, the use of chromium as a metal material is still under study. Chromium is mainly used in the form of ferroalloys (e.g. ferrochrome) for the production of stainless steel and various alloy steels. Chromium metal is used as an additive in aluminium alloys, cobalt alloys, titanium alloys, high temperature alloys and resistance heating alloys. Chromium oxide is used as light- and heat-resistant paint, abrasive, colouring agent for glass and ceramics, and catalyst for chemical synthesis. Alkaline chromium sulphate (trivalent chromium salt) is used as tanning agent for leather. Chromium alum and dichromate are used as mordant, impregnating agent and various pigments for fabric dyeing. Chromium plating and chromium penetration can make steel and copper, aluminium and other metals to form a corrosion-resistant surface layer, and bright and beautiful, a large number of furniture, automobile, construction and other industries. In addition, chrome ore is used in large quantities to make refractory materials.
